What We Do

Building a Healthier Essex County Together

The Essex County Office of Public Health Management (ECOPHM) is committed to creating a healthier, more equitable future for everyone who calls Essex County home. Our mission is simple but powerful: to make sure every resident—no matter their background or income—has access to the healthcare, education, and support they need to live their healthiest life.

We lead county-wide initiatives to prevent chronic diseases, promote mental wellness, encourage healthy living, and tackle issues like substance use head-on. We also respond swiftly to public health threats—from outbreaks to environmental concerns—keeping our communities safe and informed.

But we don’t do it alone. ECOPHM partners with local organizations, health systems, and community groups to bring resources directly to where they’re needed most. Through education, outreach, and strong public health policies, we’re breaking down barriers and building up healthier neighborhoods.

At ECOPHM, we believe that good health is a right, not a privilege. Join us as we work to ensure every Essex County resident has the opportunity to thrive.

What is Public Health ?

Public health is the science and practice of protecting and enhancing the well-being of entire populations—whether in neighborhoods, cities, countries, or global regions. It encompasses health education, the promotion of healthy lifestyles, research to prevent disease and injury, and the detection and control of infectious diseases.

2,534
ECOPHM has provided vaccines to 2,534 children and adults.
5,742
312 ECOPHM Mobile Health Clinics have brought 5,742 needed screenings and vaccinations to your local community.

Why Public Health is Important?

Public health is important because:

  • Public Health professionals try to prevent problems from happening or recurring through implementing educational programs, recommending policies, administering services, and conducting research.
  • Public Health also works to limit health disparities.
  • A large part of Public Health is promoting healthcare equity, quality, and accessibility.
